The Green Party has secured a second seat on Cork City Council after former councillor Dan Boyle was elected in Cork South Central.

Mr Boyle secured 1,524 votes and was elected on the fifth count.

Speaking to The Echo Mr Boyle said the resurgence of the Green Party is down to a number of factors but singled out more awareness of environmental issues as the main one.

“The Greens have been involved with more on the ground campaigning. We have taken an inclusive approach to social media and the mainstream media and we are making people aware of wider social issues and there have been some very positive engagements.

“In terms of people engaging with environmental issues, I would describe is at the David Attenborough effect and more young people are coming out to vote.

“I will be seeking meetings with the other parties and groupings to discuss the possibility of a civic charter and vision for Cork over the next five years. The shape of Cork should be a constant conversation,” he added.

Mr Boyle joins independent Mick Finn in taking a seat. Two of the remaining four seats are set to be taken by Seán Martin (FF) and Shane O’Callaghan (FG).
