Cork City Council to invest €2m in city cycling infrastructure

A €2M INVESTMENT in upgrades to existing cycling facilities across Cork City as well as a multimillion-euro investment in new cycling infrastructure in the city are just some of the plans to be released by Cork City Council today.

Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, City Hall has undertaken work to support social distancing in the city and to support traders as they adapt to a changed living and working environment.

Cork City Council will be unveiling the full details of its Reimagining Cork City programme this morning which has been developed with the support of Cork City Council’s elected members.

Details surrounding specific locations of cycling infrastructure repair and restoration; new infrastructure — some of which have been made public already — and how the city is responding to the challenge of Covid-19 will all be unveiled today.

A spokesperson for City Hall said that “a good share” of the facilities and upgrades Cork Cycling Campaign have been calling for in recent months will be delivered upon in the announcement.

“There were repeated complaints about the existing cycling infrastructure not being maintained. You’re going to see a €2m investment in repairing and restoring a lot of that,” said the spokesperson.

Meanwhile, around 14 streets in total will become pedestrianised or pedestrian-friendly in the city which will facilitate “an opening up of the whole city”. Some of these streets are already in place with more to follow.
