The developers of Cork's largest student accommodation development planned for the Carrigrohane Straight Road said they open to be open in time for the 2021/2022 academic year.

Planning permission is already in place since 2017 to build 484 student beds on the former Coca-Cola bottling site in buildings ranging from four to seven storeys. Work began to demolish the existing buildings and clear the site but it has remained empty since then.

Last November, London student accommodation company Future Generation acquired the site for a flagship 600-bed accommodation scheme.

The company this week lodged plans with City Hall planners seeking the go-ahead to modify the existing planning permission.

The proposed modifications include increasing the number of apartments on the site from 92 to 167 and bed spaces from 484 to 623.

The height of the proposed buildings will increase from six to ten storeys, from four to seven storeys previously permitted.

Future Generations told EchoLive that the modified plans include an on-site gym, common networking space, cycle storage space, studio space and a sky lounge with views across the River Lee.

The modified plans also include office space that will act as a headquarters for future operations in Cork and Ireland.

Tarek Jumah, Associate Director, Future Generation said: “I am delighted to be delivering this exciting scheme in Cork providing much needed high-quality student bed spaces as well as fantastic amenity spaces."

"The Cola Factory is our first European venture and I am excited to deliver this in time for the 2021/2022 academic term and drive Future Generation's European expansion further," he said.
