TV: Cork town marks 9/11, 25 years after tragedy

A Cork tribute to the victims of 9/11 is explored on the 25th anniversary of the tragedy next week.

A Garden of Remembrance on a hill a few miles from Kinsale was planted with 343 trees, each honouring a fire-fighter who lost their life in the attacks on the World Trade Center of September 11, 2001.

It provides a unique and poignant connection to the events of 25 years ago, and in Nationwide on RTÉ1 on Friday at 7pm, Richard Downes hears how this remarkable memorial came to be.

He also meets a retired New York city firefighter who was on duty on September 11 and survived the attacks.

Downes talks to members of Kinsale Fire Brigade, who meet relatives of American fire officers who died and now come to visit the Cork town.

The 25th anniversary of 9/11 is also marked in Nationwide on RTÉ1 on Wednesday at 7pm, as Downes visits other locations in Ireland where memorials have been created to honour those who lost their lives in the tragedy.

The programme explores the impact of the attacks on Ireland, and examines how the events of that day changed the world, while revealing the deep ties between Ireland and the U.S.

Meanwhile, in Nationwide on Monday at 7pm, presenter Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh celebrates the Irish cottage and how people lived in years gone by.

The channel Cork TV Ireland returns on Monday, available on various platforms including Sky, Facebook, and Instagram.
