The beautiful Cork town of Clonakilty will be seen in all its splendour when Nationwide pays it a visit next week.
In the episode on RTÉ1 on Monday at 7pm, presenter Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh meets some of its people and goes to some of the places that make it special, discovering some interesting facts about the town.
The first port of call is Fernhill House Hotel & Gardens, where history, heritage and biodiversity come together in a stunning setting. This family-run hotel has been at the heart of the local community for generations.
Bláthnaid meets Michael O’Neill, a fourth-generation proprietor whose passion for the estate’s rich history and beautifully maintained gardens is evident throughout.
He takes her on a guided tour of the 13-acre gardens, showcasing their biodiversity and year-round beauty, before welcoming her into the historic house to explore its fascinating story.
Also on the programme, there is a look back to the substantial linen tradition in the 19th and 20th centuries in Clonakilty, as Bláthnaid meets a flax enthusiast who hopes to bring it back.
Meanwhile, the episode of Nationwide on RTÉ1 on Wednesday at 7pm heads to the south-east of the country, exploring some of the great things to do and see on and off the County Wexford coast.
Along the way, the team visits the Saltee Islands, smells the delights of a lavender farm in north Wexford and they take in some breathtaking coastal scenery, while uncovering some local history.
Friday’s episode of Nationwide explores the remarkable links between Ireland and a small Italian village called Casalattico, from where generations of families emigrated to Ireland and established fish-and-chip shops.
The programme features the annual Irish Festival in Casalattico, held every summer and at which there is a great celebration of Irish food, music and shared heritage.
Presenter, Colm Flynn meets some of the Irish / Italians who run fish and chippers in Galway and Wicklow and who travel to Italy for this remarkable summer festival.
