Argentina’s Lionel Messi celebrates his side’s semi-final victory over England

A month and six days after the 23rd FIFA World Cup got under way in Mexico, the biggest-ever edition of the tournament concludes with its 104th match on Sunday.

The final is between Spain and Argentina at the New York/New Jersey Stadium, and live on RTÉ2, BBC1 and ITV at 8pm.

Look away Cork fans... it’s also the All-Ireland hurling final on Sunday, between Rebel conquerors Galway and Limerick. It’s live on RTÉ2 and BBC2 at 3.30pm.

Before that, you can get into the mood for the big occasion with Up For The Match: Live From Croke Park on RTÉ1 on Saturday at 8pm.

In a series first, the programme is coming live from Croker, where the three main stars of the show will be the fans, the venue, and the match itself the next day.

Presenters Jacqui Hurley, Dáithí Ó’Sé and Louise Cantillon share their excitement with 300 fans in the studio, overlooking the pitch, with a mix of big-name interviews from the worlds of hurling and football, and fun, games and chat with fans of both teams in the studio. Pre-recorded snippets will shine a light on the unsung heroes working tirelessly behind the scenes at Croke Park to make match days the best sporting occasion in Ireland, as well as bespoke films celebrating the two county finalists.

Meanwhile, on what promises to be an epic sporting weekend, the final two days of the British Open golf championships will be shown live on Sky on Saturday and Sunday.

This year’s event is at Royal Birkdale, a links course on England’s north-west coast.

On the rugby front, the Nations Championship games continue live on Virgin Media 1, with New Zealand hosting Ireland at Eden Park, Auckland, on Saturday at 8.10am.

Can the boys in green topple the mighty All Blacks? South Africa v Wales is on the channel on Saturday at 4.40pm.

Finally, there is live racing from The Curragh on RTÉ2 on Saturday from 2.30pm, including coverage of the Irish Oaks.
