Person to Person: 'I love water, sit in the aisle, and get ill at the thought of beans on toast'

Laura Noonan, Partnerships and Development Manager at Cork Opera House

Tell us about yourself:

I work for Cork Opera House where I am responsible for all things partnerships and development, which involves working closely with the business community.

I am constantly on the look-out for interesting creative and commercial opportunities to explore.

In my role, no one day is the same, anything can happen (and frequently does), the sky’s the limit and possibilities endless, but don’t talk to me on a Monday (I get that from my Dad) - I’m a Friday girl all the way.

I love the water, always sit in the aisle seat, jay-walk, and get physically ill at the thought of beans on toast. Let’s not even go there with ketchup.

Where were you born?

Corcaigh Abú.

Best friend?

I am very grateful to have 4 BFFs - my mom (the incomparable), my sister (the rock), TMP (the ride-or-die) and my little baby bestie, Daniel (the nephew).

Earliest childhood memory?

Much of my childhood was spent with family in Chicago, eagerly awaiting the onset of Memorial Day when all the swimming pools would open for the summer.

Person you most admire?

I’m a sap, I admire everyone. There have been so many people, so many stories that I have encountered throughout my life that have inspired me beyond words.

People’s resilience to continue, in spite of it all, motivates me, daily. However, I do want to take this moment to shout-out Eileen Walsh’s recent performance in The Second Woman - absolutely phenomenal. Love Dolly and Pam too!

Person who most irritates you?

Will need to have my solicitor present in order to answer that one.

Where was your most memorable holiday?

Travel is a big passion of mine, I’m fortunate to have had many memorable experiences across the pond that will stay with me for life.

Some highlights include BBQ-ing in South Korea, Dog The Bounty Hunter-stalking in Hawaii, spring-breaking in Mexico, canal-swimming in South Africa (I don’t recommend this), 4-wheeling and off-roading in Canada.

Not seeing the Northern Lights in Alaska, crashing a golf cart in Graceland, and picking up a deathly spider bite in Vietnam, also memorable.

All that said, there’s no place like home.

Favourite TV programme?

Period dramas are my favourite, but I’m currently obsessed with The Bear and Jeremy Allen White. I’m all over the new season.

Favourite radio show?

93.7 JR Country - churning out those country hits seven days a week!

Your signature dish if cooking?

No idea where the kitchen is.

Favourite restaurant?

I can’t stop eating the acai bowls in Guji at the moment. The Boat House in Coachford also does a great one. Actually, so do Here’s Health.

So, basically anywhere that has an acai bowl.

Last book you read?

Gabriel Byrne, Walking With Ghosts - unexpectedly brilliant.

Best book you read?

I’m a fan of everything Emma Cline, Megan Nolan, Caroline O’Donoghue, and Olivia Petter put out.

I recently finished The Muse by Ruth Millington and loved that.

Last album/CD/download you bought?

Morgan Wallen. I blocked off my entire weekend for continuous listening of his much anticipated new album I’m The Problem when it came out in May - worth it!

Favourite song?

Leonard Cohen, Famous Blue Raincoat.

One person you would like to see in concert?

An intimate gig in an intimate setting is always my preference, but Kneecap are top of the list, haven’t seen them yet. Le Boom are on my list too.

Morning person or night owl?

Multiple alarms person.

Your proudest moment?

Every time I see Michael D. Higgins step out for Ireland. Bundee Aki tap-and-going in the green, also a moment.

Spendthrift or saver?

I’d like to think I’m a saver, but there’s never any money in my account so, big spender I guess.

I should probably have a look for that kitchen... might save me a few euro.

Name one thing you would improve in your area in which you live?

Can we talk about the parking epidemic?

What makes you happy?

The sun - I’m solar powered.

How would you like to be remembered?

As someone that could always see the funny side.

What else are you up to at the moment?

Trying and failing to learn Gaeilge. I’ve just returned from a week in An Spidéal following countless nights spent up in the College of Comm and UCC.

Still, níl focal amháin agam (I had to Google that) but I will become a Gaeilgeoir if it’s the last thing I do.
