Fuel your run: Get race day ready with nutrition tips from Nourish Health Food Stores

The new Nourish store in the basement level food hall in Dunnes Stores, Patrick street, Cork.
Whether you're an experienced runner or a first timer, the right pre-race nutrition can make all the difference to your energy levels and overall experience on race day.
At Nourish, we believe in the power of natural, wholesome foods to fuel your body the right way. If you’re walking, jogging or running the Echo 5km Mini-Marathon, here are six nutritional tips to keep you energised.
Adding chia seeds to your race-day breakfast can provide a great source of energy and hydration. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and fibre, which can help sustain your energy levels during the run. Boost the carb content by adding oats to a delicious Chia Pudding.
You can easily prepare this breakfast the night before—just mix chia seeds and oats with your favourite milk, and let it sit overnight in the fridge. Top with some berries, nuts and sweetener of choice (we like honey, agave or chicory root syrups), and you’ve got a creamy, energy-boosting start to your race day.

Simple yet effective, bananas are a runner's best friend. They’re loaded with easy-to-digest carbohydrates and potassium, making them a perfect choice for preventing muscle cramps and maintaining your energy levels.
An oat-based snack can provide you with a quick carb-filled energy burst before you race. Our pick? Homespun’s new range of delicious Oat bars. Packed with goodness and made in Ireland, they blend oats, nuts and natural sugars for a quick, digestible energy boost.
Nairn’s selection of Oatcakes are another carbohydrate filled option for a pre-race snack, offering a steady release of energy. Nibble on a few of these about an hour before the race begins. They’re light, easy to digest, and won't leave you feeling overly full.
A handful of almonds is a perfect, portable snack that provides a good mix of protein, healthy fats, and fibre. These little powerhouses help stabilise your blood sugar levels, ensuring that your energy doesn’t crash midway through the race.

Remember to keep well hydrated on the morning of the race and carry your own water bottle if you need. There are water stations at the finish area, in Kennedy Park, so you’ll also be able to rehydrate straight after your 5km.
BetterYou Magnesium Water is another option for runners on race day. Magnesium supports muscle function, reduces cramping, and enhances energy metabolism, ensuring you stay strong throughout your run.
You can find these products and more to fuel your 5km at our new Nourish store inside the redeveloped basement Food Hall at Dunnes Stores Patrick Street.
Joined by fellow foodies Sheridan’s Cheese, K O’Connell Fishmongers, ABC Bakery and Sushi Gourmet, we’re thrilled to be part of this new store development to mark the 80th anniversary of Dunnes Stores, at their original Patrick Street location, which first opened its doors in 1944.
Our new store is conveniently located in the heart of Cork City, where you can find the latest health and wellness products, natural foods and nutritional supplements.
Nourish is an independent second-generation family-owned Irish business, which started in 1986 in Dublin’s north inner city. Patrick street will be the 20th Nourish store to open in Ireland.

To celebrate the grand opening on Patrick Street, we’ll be hosting a series of food tastings and product samplings in September. This is your chance to try some of our most popular products and discover new favourites, from plant-based protein powders to healthy snacks and natural skincare products.
