Newcastle stun Tottenham as Roberto De Zerbi’s big-spending side beaten again

Second-half goals by Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa helped Newcastle inflict a second consecutive defeat of the Premier League season on big-spending Tottenham.
Eight players have been signed by Spurs this summer and they spent £100million on tempting Sandro Tonali away from the Magpies, but the North East club had the last laugh in the capital with a professional display to get Matthias Jaissle off the mark with his first win in the division.
Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi fielded five of his new additions and Manchester City loan forward Omar Marmoush went close during a first half where the hosts were the better team.
However, ex-Newcastle midfield Tonali switched off to allow Elanga to open the scoring in the 62nd minute before Wissa grabbed a second 10 minutes later for a 2-0 victory.

Spurs pushed for a response but could not find a way through to ensure Jaissle celebrated a maiden Premier League win while opposite number De Zerbi tasted defeat at home for the first time since his arrival in March.
All eyes were on Tonali after he swapped clubs in the summer and his first notable involvement was a terrible pass back to new Spurs captain Micky van de Ven, who hacked down Wissa to get booked after three minutes.
Tottenham settled after a shaky start and Mathys Tel tested Lukas Hornicek in the 15th minute before only an outstanding block by Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall denied Pedro Porro a goal.
A dangerous Newcastle break soon after ended with Joe Willock’s wild effort going out for a throw, but Spurs finished the half strongly.
Full debutant Marmoush sent an effort into the side-netting after a smart Andy Robertson corner before the Egyptian returned the favour after he played in former Liverpool full-back Robertson, but Hornicek saved from a tight angle.
Hornicek’s final save of the half was from point-blank range to deny Jan Paul van Hecke’s header from a Mateus Fernandes corner.
Tottenham had a penalty shout turned down in the 47th minute after Marmoush went down with Malick Thiaw in close proximity before Newcastle started to get on top.
Hall cut inside and lashed over then Willock raced through but could not keep the ball under control after he rounded Antonin Kinsky.
Newcastle centre-back Sven Botman had a long-range strike deflected wide soon after before the deadlock was broken in the 62nd minute.
Gonzalez produced an excellent crossfield ball to fellow new boy Amar Dedic, who headed down for Elanga and he managed to spin away from Tonali before he arrowed an effort in off the post.
New Newcastle boss Jaissle celebrated with a finger wag on the touchline and opposite number De Zerbi shuffled his pack with Mohammed Kudus introduced for his first appearance since January after Tel sent a wayward free-kick high up into the South Stand.
Kudus was immediately involved as Porro let fly from range and Hornicek tipped over, but the crucial second goal went to the visitors.
Substitute Nick Woltemade’s first involvement was to flick on a corner and Wissa produced an overhead kick from close range to send the away supporters into pandemonium after 72 minutes.
Tonali’s withdrawal three minutes later sparked big cheers from the Newcastle fans and after Marmoush had a late side-footed effort saved, Newcastle comfortably played out the final moments to earn a third straight away win at Tottenham.
