Joe Biden and Mark Carney send congratulations to Mayo on All-Ireland win

Former US president Joe Biden and Canadian prime minister Mark Carney have sent their congratulations to Mayo after their All-Ireland victory.

Mayo ended their 75-year wait for All-Ireland glory with a 1-20 to 1-17 win over Kerry on Sunday.

Biden has visited Mayo on a number of occasions, and has well-traced family roots in the county.

He made an address in Ballina during his visit three years ago, telling the excited crowd: "Mayo for Sam."

In a post on Sunday, he wrote: "For the first time in 75 years, the Sam Mcguire Cup comes home to Mayo, Ireland. I said it three years ago when I was in Ballina: Mayo for Sam!

"And I meant it. I said it because I know what it means not just the county of Mayo but to my own family’s story. Today, the dream becomes reality. Congratulations to my friends in Mayo. You earned this victory. Enjoy every minute. Sam is coming home."

Carney also has family ties to Mayo. His grandparents both grew up in Westport before emigrating to Canada in 1925.

He has also visited Mayo on a number of occasions, most recently last month when he included the county in his two-day trip to Ireland.

He wrote: "A proud son of County Mayo tonight. After 75 years, the curse is broken and the Sam Maguire Cup is coming home."
