Serena Williams has been handed a wild card to play in the women’s singles at Wimbledon.

The 44-year-old had already been given a wild card into the doubles alongside sister Venus after ending a four-year spell away from tennis by beginning her comeback at Queen’s Club.

But the seven-time Wimbledon singles champion will now take her place in the individual event.

A post on Wimbledon’s X account on Sunday evening read: “This is not a drill. @serenawilliams will compete in the 2026 ladies’ singles at #Wimbledon as a wild card.”

Williams, who has won a record 23 women’s major singles titles in the Open era, ended her absence from the match court in doubles at Queen’s earlier this month.

She won her first contest alongside Victoria Mboko before the Canadian’s injury curtailed their run.

Williams then headed to Berlin but suffered a first-round loss at the WTA Tour event playing with Karolina Muchova.
