It was agony for Mark English as he missed out on the final of the 800m in the World Indoor in Torun, Poland.

Leading with a lap to go, English finished with a time of 1:46.70, as he was caught in the final 200m.

The semi-final was won by Australia’s Peter Bol in 1:46.21 ahead of Japan’s Allon Tatsunami Clay (1:46.47) and Jamaica’s Navasky Anderson (1:46.65).

It was further heartbreak for English in the world's who has won five European medals in his career.

There were mixed fortunes for the Irish women in the 60m, with Lauren Roy advancing to the semi-finals by one thousandth of a second after a fourth-place finish in 7.25.

Roy will be back on track at 7.30 pm Irish time on Saturday, with the top two to go through automatically and two overall time qualifiers.

It was not to be for Ciara Neville, as she bowed out after a fourth-place finish in 7.31.

In the 800m women's semi-final, Maeve O'Neil finished sixth as she missed out on the final.

Andrew Coscoran and Nick Griggs will carry Ireland’s hopes in a loaded men’s 3000m final this evening, a race featuring the full 1500m podium from the Paris Olympics.

The race starts at 6.22 pm.
