An injury time header was enough for Portugal to beat the Republic of Ireland in their World Cup qualifying game this evening.

The goal from Ruben Neves handed the hosts a 1-0 victory in Lisbon.

Irish keeper Caoimhin Kelleher saved a penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo as it looked like the visitors might get something from the game.It means Heimir Hallgrimsson's men have one point from their three games so far and face a major uphill task to qualify.

Earlier, Hungary kept up their unbeaten run in Group F with a 2-0 win at home to Armenia.

Former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has turned down the chance to return to the club.

The Gers are looking for a new manager after sacking Russell Martin due to their poor start to the season.

The ex Liverpool midfielder lead Rangers to a league title in 2021 but has been out of work since leaving Al-Ettifaq (PRON: Etty-fack) earlier this year.

Gerrard held talks with the club about the vacant position but has decided against going back to Ibrox.

Meanwhile, Connacht were beaten for the first time this year as they came away from Cardiff with a 14-8 loss.

Earlier, Leinster got themselves off the mark with a bonus point 31-5 victory at home to the Sharks.

Golf

England's Marco Penge has a four-shot lead after the penultimate round of the Spanish Open on the DP World Tour.

He's on 16 under-par - ahead of Joel Girrbach ((pron: gur-back)) of Switzerland in Madrid.

Tom McKibbin is currently sitting in 5th on 10 under par after his third round of 67.
