Cork GAA's county grounds will be renamed SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh "effective immediately" following a unanimous Cork County Board vote.

Last month, Cork GAA said their home would be renamed SuperValu Páirc in a €1 million naming deal with the supermarket chain.

This prompted a furious reaction from fans, former players and even politicians.

At the time, Tánaiste Micheál Martin, a Cork native and lifelong GAA supporter, wrote: "Deeply disappointed & annoyed at the proposal to change the name of Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

"Pádraig Uí Chaoimh was a key figure in the formation of the GAA at club and national level.

"[Government] allocated €30 million towards the development of the stadium and never sought naming rights."

SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh is the compromise that was agreed upon.

The stadium is named after former GAA general secretarty and revolutionary Pádraig Ó Caoimh.

In a statement issued on Thursday evening, Cork GAA said: "Club delegates to the Cork County Board met this evening to discuss the issue of naming rights for Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

"They voted unanimously to support the renaming of the stadium as 'SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh', effective immediately."
