Discovery of historic bomb behind security alert in Co Kildare

The army bomb disposal team were called to a security alert at a Co Kildare landfill site following the discovery of a historic bomb on Monday afternoon.
The Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team responded to a request for assistance from An Garda Síochána in relation to suspected historic ordnance found in Sillot Hill landfill.
The Kilcullen to Naas Road was closed for several hours around the site, and motorists and other road users were advised to use alternate routes.
A spokesperson for the Department of Defence said that they do not comment on “ongoing operations due to operational security reasons”.
In a statement the Department of Defence confirmed that bomb disposal experts from the Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team “responded to a request for assistance from An Garda Síochána in relation to suspected historic ordnance found in the Kilcullen area in Co. Kildare”.
Following an assessment by the EOD team it was assessed that no explosive material was present in the historical munition and the scene was handed over to gardai.
Following several hours of analyses the EOD left the scene at 8.45pm on Monday.
