Porridge maker Flahavan's workers to ballot for industrial action

Waterford-based company Flahavan’s has said it is "surprised and disappointed" following a decision by workers to ballot for industrial action.

The company said that they “greatly value its employees and the positive working relationship” it has built with them over many years.

Flahavan’s confirmed that discussions have been taking place with employees and their representatives regarding a new pay agreement and related working arrangements.

In a statement the company added that it remains committed to reaching “a fair and sustainable agreement that supports both its employees and the long-term success" of the business.

The company continued that it is not appropriate to comment on the details of the ongoing discussions, but believes that outstanding matters can be “resolved through continued constructive engagement and the established industrial relations process”.

The statement comes after trade union Unite said workers had unanimously decided to ballot for industrial action.

Unite says the ballot follows management’s attempt to tie a new pay deal to a proposed flexibility agreement which it says has not been seen or negotiated by the union.

The ballot is due to open on Wednesday and closes on August 21st.
