Gardaí (30s) arrest and disarm man with knife in Co Louth

Gardaí have used less-lethal force to detain a man armed with a knife in Co. Louth.

At 9.30 pm, a man was armed with a knife at an open car park in Dundalk.

Gardaí engaged with the man to try and de-escalate the situation and directed him to drop the knife.

The man did not comply, and gardaí from the Armed Support Unit discharged one round from a 40mm less-lethal force option.

As a result of this intervention, gardaí were able to disarm the man.

The man was arrested and held at Dundalk Garda station and has since been charged.

He is due to appear before Drogheda District Court.

The arrested man received appropriate medical treatment.

The discharge of a less-lethal device has been notified to the Office of the Police Ombudsman (Fiosrú) as is the policy of An Garda Síochána.
