Six people were taken to hospital following a rescue attempt of a child who got into swimming difficulties at a popular Co Wexford swimming area.

A multi-agency team, which included the Coast Guard Rescue 117 helicopter, Rosslare Lifeboat crew, several National Ambulance Service units, and gardaí resulted when a man first attempted to rescue the child from the sea along Rosslare Strand on Sunday afternoon.

He then got into difficulty in the choppy sea waters.

Four other beachgoers also attempted to rescue the child and man in the choppy waters.

All six people involved in the incident were brought to Wexford General Hospital and are in stable condition.

All of the injured parties are in a stable condition.

Local Independent Councillor and National Ambulance Service member, Ger Carthy, said that they responded to an incident in Rosslare Strand on Sunday afternoon where people required “medical assistance”.

“Six people were taken to Wexford General Hospital, with five of those by land and one by our colleagues on Rescue 117,” Cllr Carthy added.

He wished all those who had to be rescued “a speedy recovery”.

“(This incident) emphasises the importance of safety at sea,” the councillor noted.
