A man has been charged in connection with the assault of a garda in Cork city.

The member was attacked while on high-visibility patrol after stopping and speaking to a man in his 30s, who then became violent on Monday evening on Patrick Street.

The garda was treated in hospital and is currently off duty.

The man was arrested and detained at a garda station in Cork city.

He has since been charged and is due before Cork District Court on Tuesday morning.
