The body of a 30-year-old man has been recovered off the coast of Galway.

A distress call was made from a boat just before 3am on Saturday.

The vessel, which had three people on board, was located just off the coast of Mace Head, north of St Macdara’s Island, at the time.

The boat capsized, according to The Irish Times.

Two of the casualties made their way safely ashore unharmed, while the Irish Coast Guard continued searching for the third.

The body of the third person was recovered along the shoreline shortly before 8am.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The coroner has been notified, and the deceased man has been taken to the mortuary at University Hospital Galway where a postmortem will be carried out.

The response involved rescue helicopters 115 from Shannon and 117 from Waterford, along with the Costello Bay and Cleggan Coast Guard Units and the Aran Island and Clifden RNLI lifeboats.
