In the same four-day period, over of 240 drivers were detected for holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.

Gardaí have been conducting both statutory Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) and regular, high-visibility policing checkpoints.

As a result, a total of 123 people were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant so far.

An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) are urging all road users to support their efforts to keep them and all others on the roads safe this May bank holiday weekend.

An Garda Síochána said gardaí will be placing a particular emphasis on detecting those driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs this weekend.
