A cyclist has died after colliding with railings in Co Laois.

Gardaí are investigating the incident which occurred in College Avenue, Mountmellick, on Sunday at around 4:30pm.

The male cyclist in his 50s was taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise, where he died.

The road was closed for a technical examination of the scene.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.
