Man and teenager arrested as gardaí search for firearm discharged by child in Ballymun

A man and a teenage boy have been arrested following a firearms incident in Ballymun, Co Dublin, on Tuesday.

Gardaí responded to the incident at 3 pm.

Gardaí are searching for a firearm that was accidentally discharged by a young child who discovered the weapon in a bush.

The gun is understood to have been discarded by a man who was being pursued by gardaí in connection with a separate incident.

A man in his 20s and a juvenile in his teens were detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939 in a Garda Station in the Dublin region.

The teenager has since been released from custody. A file will be prepared for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The man remains in custody.

There were no reports of injuries in relation to this incident.

Gardaí are engaging with the family of another juvenile following this incident, affording them all available supports.

A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead this investigation.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward.

Anyone who was in the Ballymun area on Tuesday 28th April 2026 at the time and who may have information or camera footage is asked to contact investigating Gardaí.
