RTÉ appoints Sean Whelan to London correspondent role

RTÉ has announced the appointment of Sean Whelan as its new London correspondent.

Whelan was RTÉ's Washington correspondent for the last four years. This role has now been given to Jackie Fox, who began last month.

The national broadcaster said Whelan held the position of London correspondent before he covered Washington, and reported on Brexit, the Covid-19 pandemic, and the broader world of UK politics.

Whelan also previously held the role of economics correspondent for almost nine years.

RTÉ said he will now be returning to the London correspondent role, being responsible for reporting across RTÉ's online, video, and audio platforms on all aspects of life in London and wider Great Britain.

On his appointment, Whelan said: "I’m looking forward to returning to London at yet another pivotal moment for UK politics.

"Having been in Covid lockdown during most of my previous posting there, I’m also really looking forward to now being able to report on an even wider range of stories from all over Great Britain.”

Whelan is commencing his new role with immediate effect.
