A woman in her 40s has been killed in a fatal assault, and a man, also in his 40s, has been arrested in Waterford city.

The incident occurred at a domestic residence in Grange Heights in the city on Monday evening.

Gardaí and emergency services responded at around 6.15pm.

The woman was taken to University Hospital Waterford, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

The State Pathologist has been notified, and a post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course, a garda statement said.

The man was arrested at the scene and is detained at a Garda station in the Waterford Division under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

The scene is currently preserved for technical examination.

A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation, and an incident room has been established at Waterford Garda Station.

A family liaison officer has also been assigned to support the woman's family.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the incident to come forward.

Anyone who was in the Grange Heights area on Monday, April 27th, between 6pm and 6.30pm, who may have camera footage, including CCTV or dashcam, has been asked to provide their footage to investigating Gardaí.

Investigations are ongoing, the garda statement said.
