The army bomb squad was called to Mountjoy prison on Sunday night due to a security threat.

Gardaí responded to reports of a security alert at the prison’s staff car park on North Circular Road, Dublin 7, at around 7pm on Sunday.

A cordon was put in place for several hours and the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) attended the scene, a garda spokesperson confirmed.

Following a security sweep the facility was deemed safe and the cordon was lifted.
