The army bomb squad was called to Mountjoy prison on Sunday night due to a security threat.

Gardaí responded to reports of a security alert at the prison’s staff car park on North Circular Road, Dublin 7, at around 7pm on Sunday.

A cordon was put in place for several hours and the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) attended the scene, a garda spokesperson confirmed.

Following a security sweep the facility was deemed safe and the cordon was lifted.

It is understood that prison officers had to remain in Mountjoy until the area was deemed safe.

Garda inquiries are ongoing.
