A man and a woman have been arrested after two gardaí were hospitalised following an alleged assault in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, on Thursday.

The assault took place after gardaí received a call to attend a premises on Neil T. Blaney Road in the town at around 3pm.

The two male gardaí attended the scene, where they were assaulted by a man in his 30s.

The man and woman, who is also in her 30s, were detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 in a Garda station in the Donegal division.

Both gardaí received treatment in hospital for injuries received during the incident.

They have since been discharged.

An Garda Síochána is providing peer support to the injured members, a garda statement said.

The man remains in custody, but the woman has been released and charged in connection with the investigation.

She is due to appear before Letterkenny District Court on Monday, May 11th.

Investigations are ongoing, a garda statement said.
