Gardaí are investigating a petrol bomb attack on a house in Waterford city in the early hours of Thursday morning, which left a man needing hospital treatment.

Shortly before 3am on Thursday, gardaí were alerted to a house fire in the Larchville area of the city.

Gardaí are treating fire as arson and that a petrol bomb was thrown through a downstairs window, engulfing the house in flames.

Fire units, the ambulance service and the gardaí attended the scene.

The man, aged in his 50s, managed to escape the property and was subsequently brought to University Hospital Waterford (UHW) for treatment.

Significant damage was caused to the property. In a statement, gardaí said they and fire services responded to reports of an incident of alleged criminal damage by fire.

“A male aged in his 50s was taken to University Hospital Waterford for injuries believed to be non-life threatening,” gardaí added

The scene is currently held for technical examination.

Gardaí are asking that anybody with any information contact Waterford Gardaí in confidence on 051-305300 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
