A man, aged in his 40s, has been arrested in connection with the fatal assault of a man, aged in his 70s, at a home in Co Waterford.

The fatal assault occurred in the townland of Cappagh, Dungarvan, on Monday evening.

Shortly after 6pm, gardaí and emergency services responded to an incident that occurred outside a residential property in Cappagh.

A man, aged in his 70s, was discovered with serious injuries and was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. The remains of the deceased have been removed from the scene to the mortuary in University Hospital Waterford where a postmortem will taken place in due course, gardaí said.

A man, aged in his 40s, was arrested at the scene and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda station in the Eastern Region.

The scene and domestic residence have been preserved for forensic examination.

The coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified.

A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Dungarvan Garda Station.

Investigations are ongoing, gardaí said.
