A driver has been caught doing 124 km/h in an 80km/h zone in Redbog, Dundalk in Co Louth.

Gardaí are carrying out a road policing operation over the bank holiday weekend.

Over 1,450 drivers have been caught speeding in the first 48 hours of the operation, which started on Thursday and runs until Wednesday morning.

Other notable speeds detected on Friday include 138 km/h in a 100km/hr zone on the N18 Ballinacurra, in Weston, Co Limerick and 85 km/h in a 50km/hr zone on the R617 in Kilnamucky, Tower, Co Cork.

Gardaí have also arrested 56 people for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Over 120 drivers have so far been detected holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.

Gardaí have stationed themselves at regular checkpoints and are conducting mandatory intoxication tests.

Gardaí are reminding all drivers this weekend to slow down, not drive under the influence, take extra care and give driving their full attention.
