A man in his 20s is due to appear before Dublin District Court charged with possession of a knife following a fight on Abbey Street in the city centre.

Gardaí on foot patrol attended the scene of a public order incident involving several youths at around 5.15pm on Sunday.

The man was arrested after gardaí found he had a knife while on Eden Quay, Dublin 1.

“The man was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda Station in the Dublin Metropolitan Region,” gardaí said in a statement.

He has since been charged and is due to appear before the Criminal Courts of Justice at 10.30am on Monday.

Garda investigations are ongoing.

Former Lord Mayor of Dublin Christy Burke said a man “wielding such a large knife is utterly reprehensible and this is what gives our city a really bad reputation of being unsafe”.
