A man in his 40s has been taken to hospital following an assault in Cork city centre.

The man sustained injuries near a shop on Oliver Plunkett Street at 1.40pm on Friday.

Paramedics went to the assistance of the injured man at the scene before he was transferred to Cork University Hospital by ambulance.

His injuries are not life-threatening.

A man in his 30s has been arrested in connection with the assault and is being held for questioning at a Garda station in Cork.

CCTV security camera footage will be examined in relation to the incident.

Investigations are ongoing, gardaí said.
