A man has been arrested after two teenagers, a girl and a boy in their mid-teens, were injured after being hit by a car in Co Offaly.

The girl's condition is understood to be critical.

The collision occurred on the Tullamore Road in Clara shortly after 6.15pm on Wednesday.

The girl was treated at the scene and subsequently brought to CHI Crumlin, while the boy was brought to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The man in his 40s was arrested at the scene in connection with the incident and is detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda station in Co Offaly.

The scene has been preserved for examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators, and local traffic diversions are in place.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to come forward. Any road users or pedestrians who may have camera footage, including dash cam, and were in the area of Tullamore Road, Frederick Street and Bridge Street, Clara, at the time of the collision have been asked to make their footage available to investigating Gardaí.
