A Dublin man accused of starting a mattress fire in his bedroom, which led to his building being evacuated, has been remanded in custody.

Shane Goodall, 47, appeared at Dublin District Court on Saturday, charged with causing damage by fire to a mattress at his address, North Circular Road, on Friday.

Garda Sophie Ennis alleged that the fire brigade was called and that the building was evacuated.

The court heard the accused had a room in an apartment and set fire to his mattress.

Garda Ennis opposed bail, citing fears that he would return to the property, but the defence suggested a condition that Mr Goodall stay away from the premises.

Judge Gerard Jones set bail at €200 and remanded the accused, who has yet to enter a plea, in custody pending the cash lodgement.

On taking up bail, he must stay away from the building and another property in a different part of Dublin 7.
