‘Number of viable pipe bomb-type devices’ discovered in Co Antrim

A “number of viable pipe bomb-type devices” have been discovered in Co Antrim.

Police said the devices have been made safe and removed for forensic examination.

It follows a security alert in the Upper Hightown Road of Newtownabbey.

A police spokesperson said officers received a report of a suspicious object in the area at about 3:50pm on Tuesday.

“Officers attended the scene along with ammunition technical officers and a number of viable pipe bomb-type devices were discovered,” they said in a statement on Wednesday.

“The devices have been made safe and they have since been removed from the scene and taken away for further forensic examination. Cordons have been lifted and the road reopened to traffic.”

They said inquiries are ongoing and issued an appeal to anyone with any information that could assist with the investigation to contact detectives on 101, quoting reference number 1018 13/01/26.
