A 20-year-old man from Cork who died in France while on a skiing holiday has been named locally.

Cian O’Brien from Tower, Blarney, Co Cork, was a student in University College Cork (UCC) who became ill on Sunday night when he was with friends in the well-known French ski resort of Alp d’Huez.

Emergency services were alerted by Mr O’Brien’s friends when they failed to rouse him on Monday morning.

Medics on scene were unable to resuscitate him and he was pronounced dead by a local doctor. A postmortem is due to take place later this week.

It is understood Mr O’Brien was an apprentice electrician.

Efforts are now underway to repatriate his body back to Ireland.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said that they are aware of the case and are providing consular assistance.

“As in all cases the Department does not comment on individual cases.”
