A man in his 40s has been arrested in connection with a serious assault in Co Roscommon on New Year's Day, which left a man in critical condition.

The incident happened on Barrack Street in Ballaghadereen in the early hours of Thursday morning, around 1am.

The injured man, aged in his 30s, was brought to Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, where he remains in a critical condition.

The arrested man is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a station in the Garda North Western Region.

A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed and an incident room has been established in Castlerea Garda Station.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact them.

Any persons who were in the vicinity of Barrack Street between 12:45am and 1:15am on January 1st and who may have video footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.
