A well-known Donegal bakery has officially announced that it will close after 145 years in operation, with the loss of up to 30 jobs.

Daniel Doherty Bakery in Moville recently told staff of the closure in recent weeks.

But the bakery officially made their announcement on Wednesday that their ovens will be officially turned off for the last time on December 31st.

The announcement is the end of an era for generations of Donegal people who bought the company's cakes and breads.

A spokesperson for the company said "To our loyal customers, dedicated staff, and trusted suppliers.

"It is with a heavy heart, but a deep sense of pride, that we announce the closure of Daniel Doherty Ltd on the 31st of December.

"For 145 years, our ovens have been the heartbeat of this business. From our founding in 1880 to the present day, we have had the immense privilege of being part of your daily lives, your family celebrations, and your morning routines."

The spokesperson said the business could not have operated but for the skill and dedication of their staff.

It is estimated that 30 people have now lost their jobs as a result of the closure.

The company also thanked their suppliers and their legions of loyal customers.

The spokesperson added "To our staff: You are the hands and hearts that made this bakery what it is. Your hard work and craft have been our greatest asset.

"To our suppliers: Thank you for your decades of partnership and reliability. And to our customers: Thank you for choosing us, generation after generation.

"We close this chapter with nothing but gratitude for the century and a half of memories we’ve shared together."
