Dublin is now the third most congested city in Europe, and 11th in the world, according to a report from Inrix.

Drivers in the city were delayed an average of 95 hours in 2025, four hours more than in London and eight more than in LA.

Delays in the capital have increased by 17 per cent in a year, causing Dublin to jump four places in the global ranking.

Professor in transportation at the Centre for Transport Research, Brian Caulfield, said there is no quick solution to Dublin's congestion problem.

Speaking on Newstalk, he said: "There's a number of reasons why congestion is so bad at the moment. Primarily because our population has increased.

"We haven't really delivered any new public transport infrastructure in the capital since 2017. That was the last time we built a new Luas line. So, a lack of investment in public transport has really led to this.

"Any fixes in terms of how we can alleviate congestion are probably at least five/10 years away with the likes of, say, the Luas line to Finglas or the MetroLink system.

"They're a good bit away in terms on construction and for us to deliver them to try and reduce this congestion."
