A man is in a critical condition following a serious assault in Co Tyrone.

Detectives are appealing for information following the incident in Omagh in the early hours of Sunday.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police officers on patrol in the Main Street area of the town came across a man with a number of facial and head injuries at around 1am.

“While he was being spoken to, his condition rapidly deteriorated.

“Officers carried out CPR on the man, aged in his 30s, before taking him to hospital where, at this time, he is in a critical but stable condition.”

An 18-year-old man arrested at the scene on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent remains in custody.

The spokesperson added: “We believe the assault may have occurred in the gated Main Street area, and would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anything suspicious, or who may have CCTV/dashcam or other video footage which could assist with police inquiries, to contact officers on 101. The relevant reference number is 95 21/12/25.”
