Speed limits on two of Carlow's busiest and most dangerous routes have been reduced from today.

Limits on the N80 from Carlow Town to Enniscorthy, and N81 to Tullow will drop from 100km/h to 80km/h.

Gardaí have appealed to road users to slow down and take note of the new speed limits.

Superintendent Anthony Farrell from Carlow Garda Station told Newstalk that they hope the change will save lives.

"We would remind motorists that the reason for this reduction in speed limit is the prevalence of serious and fatal traffic collisions on these particular routes. This reduction in speed limit has been the result of extensive consultation with communities in the affected areas, Carlow local authority and indeed, Transport Infrastructure Ireland," he said.
