Gardaí have arrested a fifth man, aged in his 20s, as part of an investigation into an incident of assault causing harm at Midlands Prison.

The incident is alleged to have taken place on December 6th.

Four men, all aged in their 20s and 30s, were arrested in connection with the investigation last week. However, they were all released without charge and returned to Midlands Prison in Portlaoise.

An Garda Síochána said it is continuing to investigate all the circumstances of the incident, and that the man arrested on Tuesday is currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda Station in the Eastern Region.
