Tributes have been paid to former RTÉ broadcaster and author David Hanly following his death at the age of 82.

Mr Hanly was known for his long career presenting Morning Ireland as well as his television interviews with writers and poets on Hanly’s People.

The Limerick native also wrote a column and had a career in public relations.

On RTÉ’s News at One on Friday, Morning Ireland host Aine Lawlor said Mr Hanly was a “wonderful writer with the most amazing deep voice”.

She added: “He was synonymous with Morning Ireland from the get-go back in 1984.

“He taught me and so many other journalists on Morning Ireland and in the newsroom so much.

“He is – and will be – sorely missed.”

In a statement, Taoiseach Micheal Martin said: “I have fond memories of interviews with him on Morning Ireland.

“He was sharp, highly intelligent, and always had a sense of perspective.

“He put Morning Ireland on the map. His voice was unmistakable.

Tánaiste Simon Harris said: “David became a household name through RTÉ’s Morning Ireland but he was also a distinguished author, columnist and scriptwriter.

“He enjoyed a rich and varied career in journalism and public relations.

“For many, including myself, David was the voice we woke up to every weekday as the presenter of RTÉ’s Morning Ireland for some two decades.

“As one of the show’s first presenters, his unambiguous and commanding voice etched him into the public psyche."
