An Irish woman who became suddenly unwell while holidaying in the US has died in hospital.

Seodhna Deasy from Cork is understood to have been visiting the US capital of Washington DC, last week when she became seriously ill.

Ms Deasy, was rushed to a nearby hospital where she remained in a serious condition for a number of days, but she died earlier this week.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said they are “aware of the case" and that they are “providing consular assistance".

“The Department does not comment on the details of individual cases,” the spokesperson added.
