Two young men have appeared in court charged with the murder of father-of-four Barry Daly in Doneraile, Co Cork, over the weekend.

The body of Mr Daly (44) was found outside his home at Rockview Terrace in the town in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Alex Deady of Glenview, Convent Road, Doneraile, and a juvenile who cannot be named for legal reasons appeared before Mallow District Court in Co Cork on Tuesday afternoon.

Mr Deady and the juvenile were both charged with the murder of Mr Daly contrary to common law.

Evidence of arrest charge and caution in the case of twenty year old Alex Deady was given by Det Garda Gary Costello of Charleville Garda Station. He said that the accused made no reply when the charge was put to him under caution this afternoon.

Det Garda Noelle McSweeney of Mallow Garda Station gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution in the case of the juvenile. She said he made no reply when the charge was put to him under caution this afternoon.

No bail applications were made as bail cannot be granted at district court level when the charge is that of murder.

Alex Deady was remanded in custody to appear before Mallow District Court by video link on October 21st next. The juvenile was remanded in detention to Oberstown Detention Campus. He will also appear by video link on October 21st next.

Free legal aid was assigned to both accused. The case was heard by Judge Colm Roberts. Solicitor Charlie O’Connor is representing Alex Deady whilst the juvenile is being represented by Denis Linehan.

Meanwhile, the case was upgraded to a murder probe following the completion of a postmortem examination yesterday at Cork University Hospital by Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster.

Mr Daly was a postman in Mallow town. He is survived by his partner Katie and their four children, his parents, three siblings, extended family and friends. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
