An investigation is underway after a body was discovered following a fire in Cavan.

Gardaí say they were called to a home in the Killygowan area on Monday evening at 7.35pm.

Local fire services also attended and extinguished the blaze.

The remains of the individual were found in the building, which gardaí described as “extensively damaged”.

They did not say whether the body was male or female, or give the age of the individual.

The scene is preserved for a technical examination and inquiries are ongoing.

Gardaí say the body remains at the scene and the local coroner’s office has been notified.
