A Dublin man charged following a seizure of a Glock handgun and ammunition has been held on €400 cash bail.

Karl Donnelly, 34, with an address at Newmarket Yards, D8, was charged with firearms offences and appeared at Dublin District Court on Tuesday evening.

Judge John Hughes said Mr Donnelly, who had no prior criminal convictions, faced very serious charges, possessing a Glock semi-automatic pistol and 25 rounds of 9mm calibre ammunition

The alleged seizure was at his address on Monday.

Judge Hughes was told that the accused made "no reply" when charged at Irishtown garda station.

Judge Hughes also noted that Mr Donnelly, who did not address the court, had no bench warrant history.

Defence counsel Kevin McCrave, instructed by solicitor Niall O'Connor, said his client was on social welfare and had some mental health issues.

The barrister acknowledged the seriouness of the matter but stressed that Mr Donnelly would abide by conditions.

The judge heard that the prosecuting garda was agreeable subject to terms being imposed on Mr Donnelly, who did not address the court.

He has yet to indicate a plea.

Judge Hughes set bail in his bond of €500 and ordered him to lodge €100. He also stipulated that an independent surety must lodge €300 before he can be released.

On taking up bail, he must obey a curfew, seek garda approval for an address change, be contactable by phone, and sign on daily at a Garda station.

He was remanded in custody with consent to those conditions and will appear again next week. Directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions must be obtained.

Legal aid was granted.
