'We've got to stop the killing': Taoiseach and Tánaiste urge Hamas to accept Gaza peace plan

The Taoiseach and Tánaiste are among world leaders who are urging Hamas to accept a US-proposed peace plan for Gaza.

Speaking on Newstalk on Tuesday, Tánaiste Simon Harris said the proposals need to be acted on.

"I would really ask that Hamas now accept it, that people grasp this moment. As with any peace plan, there's always more to do, there's always more detail to follow.

"We even know on this island, peace is always ongoing, always needs to be cared for, always needs attention. But the international community will stand with Palestine, will stand with the people of Palestine.

"But right now, we've got to stop the killing, and there's a chance to do that, and there's a chance to release the hostages."

The White House released on Monday a 20-point document that called for an immediate ceasefire, an exchange of hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, a staged Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, Hamas disarmament and a transitional government led by an international body.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accepted the deal on Monday evening.
