Gardaí are investigating an assault on a female visitor to Cork Prison.

The incident occurred during inmate visitation earlier on Wednesday.

The Irish Prison Service has reported the matter to gardaí, and an investigation will be carried out into the matter.

The woman has received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. It is understood she was visibly shocked by what had occurred.

The man who assaulted her was known to her.

Gardai are investigating the incident.

The emergency services were notified and the woman was medically treated onsite before being taken to hospital for a further assessment.
