A man in his 5os is in critical condition following a two-vehicle road traffic collision at Castlebar Road, Newport, Co Mayo, on Sunday.

A man (aged in his 60s) has been arrested in connection with the investigation.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of the collision, which involved a car and a motorcycle, at approximately 4:50pm on Sunday.

The motorcyclist was discovered with serious injuries at the scene. He received medical treatment and was conveyed to Mayo University Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

No other injuries were reported at the time.

The road was preserved for technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. The road has since reopened.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area of Castlebar Road, Newport, Co Mayo, between 4pm and 5pm on Sunday are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.
